Allston
is the only city neighborhood in the country named after an artist,
Washington Allston (1779-1843). Allston graduated from Harvard
and studied in London, Rome, and Paris. He is best known for ushering
in Romanticism in America, and his paintings can be seen at the
Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Fogg Museum at Harvard.
He maintained a studio in Cambridgeport on the corner of Auburn
and Magazine Streets (a plaque on the building still honors him)
and is buried in the Old Burying Ground in Harvard Square.
